READ THIS
The title of my book is The DaVinci Code, by Dan Brown. I decided to read this book because many different people said the book was good and overall it had a good reputation. THe book takes place in France, and for a little while in England, in modern times. The Da Vinci Code is suspensful and actually very religious, while the tone is mysterious, kind of like someone slowly pulling up a curtain in front of something you really want to see. Most of the time the book kept me exited and made me think a lot. The main character's name is Robert Langdon, but Sophie Neveu is very important too. I don't have much in common with either of them, but I have more in common with Sophie, besides being an American like Langdon. Sophie and I both like to solve puzzles, and, of course, we are both girls. Sophie never wants to give up and is caring, like me. Most of the characters in this book are adults, so I dont have that much in common with them. I would like to switch places with Sophie, because of all the codes she gets to figure out and the adventures she has, but on the other hand, some people are trying to kill her. Well, I do live in the world this book is set in, and I'm glad I do, there are so many cool places to go and see. If Robert Langdon lived in our house...I wouldn't know what to do. It would be very awkward at first, but after a while, he would seem kind of like a cousin, brother, or uncle. I would recommend others to read this book because it is very descriptive and a good mystery novel. THe book does have some bad parts...and when they have a discussion about religon it gets kind of boring. I would rank this book an 8. GRADE THIS FOR DECEMBER
I read OCTOBER SKY by Homer Hickam Jr. THere were 428 pages and the writing was small. It is an a true story, from the 1950's in a place called Coalwood, West Virginia. External conflict-a guy from the coalmine shoots at Homer's dad, Mr. Hickam, through the kitchen window from a car. Internal conflict-Homer, who is usually called Sonny, has to choose whether to please his dad by going to work at the coalmine, or please his mom, teacher, and friends by continuing to launch his rockets. My favorite character was Sonny. I feel so bad for him because, although his mom and dad love each other, they have very different views. If he does one thing, his mother will be proud but his father will be disappointed and visa versa. He is very accepting, even though he is friends with some strange people. His best friends are Roy Lee, who is strong and not very smart,Sherman, who has a shriveled leg but Sonny has known him for a long time, O'Dell, who is a helpful friend, and Quinten, a huge nerd who is poor in money but rich in brains and spirit. There is also Miss Riley, who is Sonny's favorite teacher and always believes in him. The book is about Sonny whose dad is the mine superintendent. Basically, the mine is closing down and that means eventually Coalwood too. Even though Sonny's mom tries to convince his dad to move, Mr. Hickam loves the mine. Sonny and his friends decide to make rockets after Sputnik shoots through the sky. At the beginning, not many people believe but after awhile they do. In this book, Sonny goes through lots of tragedies and conflicts but also endures many happy and joyous times. I would recommend this book because it is very interesting and there is lots of emotion. I read this book because in Tech. Ed. we watched the movie because we were going into our rocket unit and Mr. Wendel said the book was good. Book Journal Check, Nov. 11
I just finished The Last Book in the Universe, by Rodman Philbrick. There are 223 pages. The story is fiction, and although the place seems different from our Earth, I'm pretty sure it is our Earth, just in the future. Hints to this is that there is this "perfect" place called Eden, where it looks exactly like our Earth is right now, and the other part of the world is all grayish brown, and there are books(actually just one). An external conflict in the book is when Spaz (the main character), Ryter, and Little Face run into the Latch Queen and Bleek and his Furies. The Latch Queen and Bleek fight as Spaz, Ryter, and Little Face try to survive. An internal conflict is when Spaz has to choose whether to lie to Billy Bizmo and tell him that he took everything from Ryter or tell Bizmo the truth. My favorite character in the book is Ryter. He is this old man that lives in the "stacks" and writes books. When he is going to get canceled, Spaz is told to take all his belongings. That's how they meet. What I like about Ryter is that he thinks everyone else is the hero, when it is really him that leads Spaz to his happiness(you have to read the book). The other main characters are Spaz, the narrator to the story, Little Face, a little boy Spaz befriends, and Lanaya a Proov(someone who is genetically altered and lives in Eden)that gives food and becomes friends with Spaz. Spaz is a orphaned boy who has spazzes sometimes(hence his name). Spaz is always watched closely by the Latch leaders, which ,to Ryter and Lanaya, is sort of suspicious. Spaz's foster sister, Bean(don't ask), is the only one Spaz really loves. Little Face is a little boy that lived in the stacks. On his way to cancel Ryter, Spaz meets him, Little Face hoping to get a snack. Spaz then gives him a Chox Bar, which leads to Little Face learning the only word he says(basically)in the book, CHOX!Lanaya is a Proov who would travel out of Eden to give food to the people that weren't as fortunate to get genetically improved. Basically, the book is about a boy, Spaz, who finds out his sister is about to die and tries to go and see her. On the way, he becomes friends with a man named Ryter, who is an author. Ryter leads the way, with all his experience, and on the way Ryter tells Spaz the importance of books. In their travels, they walk into fights and all sorts of dilemas, but they never give up. And in the end, they see what their world used to be, and Spaz finds out who he really is. I would definitely recommend this book because it keeps you thinking and goes in depth. I chose to read this book because I wanted to in 4th grade, but our librarian said it wasn't a 4th grade book. Current Mood: zzzzzzzzzz... | | Wednesday, October 26th, 2005 | | 3:12 pm |

entry for grade
Hello I just finished ON THE FAR SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN by Jean Craighead George. There are 170 pages, so it wasn't hard to finish. The setting is in relatively recent times, on a mountain. An example of internal conflict is at the end of the book, when Sam (the main character) has to decide whether to call Frightful (his peregrine falcon) and get her back or to not call her and let her free. An example of an external conflict is when Sam has to defend his sister Alice from angry goshawk parents. My favorite character is Alice. At the end of the previous book, MY SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN, she decides to stay with Sam. To Sam, Alice is a nice companion. She loves waterfalls. In fact, her dream is to sleep beside a waterfall and climb one. One of her best friends is a pig named Crystal. Once Alice names an animal, she becomes attached to it. Alice is also very clever, and on Sam's journey to keep an eye on her, she makes very creative clues as to where she is going. The book is about a boy named Sam who lives with his sister in the wilderness. He has to fend for himself and make shelter for himself, but with the help of his peregrine falcon, Frightful, he is able to. Then something tragic happens. Frightful is taken by a "conservation officer" because she is an endangered species. Then his sister leaves to start her own quest. Sam then wants to watch over her to make sure she is alright. Not sure where his sister is going, he has to track her down with his friend Bando along with trying to get Frightful back. He then unwraps his adventure. I would recommend this book because it is interesting and realistic although the ending might disappoint some... Current Mood: accomplished | | Friday, October 7th, 2005 | | 9:52 am |

Hi friends. Have you read The Transall Saga? It is really good. It is about a boy who is camping in the desert. In the morning, he finds a strange light. Then he accidentally falls into it. Without knowing it, he is put thousands of years into the future. Trying to find his way back home, he finds people, strange places, and...artifacts. Somehow he has to find a way to kill a certain someone, and get back home. It is a really cool book. U should read it. Current Mood: calm |
